MORE THAN two weeks after last month’s Maha Kumbh stampede, which claimed at least 30 lives, the Uttar Pradesh Police are still investigating whether it was a “conspiracy”, but are yet to find any substantial evidence to support the claim. No FIR has been filed yet in connection with the January 29 stampede.
The police, analysing images and videos from the Kumbh area, are still closely monitoring for any signs of foul play before the stampede, officers said on Wednesday. They reviewed the incident footage multiple times to track movements of devotees at the site, the officers added.
The Kumbh administration had installed cameras across the area, including at the stampede site. Officers are also examining photographs and videos of the incident that surfaced online.
Police overseeing the probe remain tight-lipped, but senior officers, who did not wish to be named, said that no one has been identified as provoking the stampede. They are also not pursuing any persons under suspicion.
Sources said that investigators have yet to find concrete evidence of a conspiracy or identify any person or group responsible for triggering the stampede.
DIG (Kumbh) Vaibhav Krishna confirmed that the inquiry is ongoing.
